Things to consider when choosing an electricity supplier

Have you been contacted by electricity salespeople by phone or in person who promise you much lower electricity costs if you sign a contract with them? Below are some facts and some good advice that may be good to know when choosing an electricity supplier.

– Since autumn 2019, the Swedish Consumer Energy Market Agency has been compiling a list of the electricity companies that have received the most complaints. The list may be useful to know when making your choice. You can find it here.

– Be careful when giving a power of attorney to a company via telephone, internet or in store so that the power of attorney does not give greater powers than you intended. For example, the power of attorney may give the company the right to terminate the agreement you have with your current supplier even if it means you will receive a termination fee.

– There are brokerage services that make procurements and switches to another electricity company for you. Keep in mind that they often switch to the electricity company that offers the broker the best compensation. This is not always the best price or terms for you.

– You have a 14-day right of withdrawal if you have been called and have signed an electricity purchase agreement over the phone. The right of withdrawal also applies if you have signed an agreement in person.

– In telephone sales, since 2018 you must be given the opportunity to accept the company's offer in writing after the call has ended. Without the written acceptance, the agreement is not valid.

– All electricity customers must have both an electricity network agreement and an electricity trading agreement.
