Our hydroelectric power plant in Jonsered

The power plant, which was built in 1900–1903, is located on the Säveån River and is in operation.

It has four generators (aggregates) that together can produce up to 1,900 kW of electricity. In one year, the power plant generates 8 GWh of electricity, which is enough to supply approximately 2000 three-room apartments with renewable electricity.

In 2006, the power plant was modernized with new control equipment and a 10 kV high-voltage switchgear was installed to improve electricity production.

The building has been designated as Sweden's most beautiful granite power plant building by the National Heritage Board! We are very proud of that at Partille Energi!

Unit 1 (G1)

Manufactured in 1956 by the German company Maier. It has an output of 662 kW and spins at 250 rpm. The generator, a Siemens-Schuckert, has a capacity of 950 kVA.

Unit 2 (G2)

Built in 1902 by JM Voith. Originally it had a speed of 225 rpm but was upgraded to 1957 rpm in 250. The power is 405 kW and the generator, manufactured by Oerlikon, has a capacity of 500 kW.

Unit 3 (G3)

Built in 1953 by Finshyttan. Has an output of 660 kW and spins at 250 rpm. The generator is from Asea (1952) and has a capacity of 840 kVA.

Unit 4 (G4)

Manufactured in 1933 by Nohab. Has an output of 618 kW and spins at 250 rpm. The generator, from Asea (1934), has a capacity of 750 kVA.

How does hydropower work?

Hydropower plants generate electricity by using the kinetic energy of flowing water. To control electricity production, larger watercourses are dammed, which converts the water's kinetic energy into potential energy.

By regulating the dam gates, the potential energy in the water is converted back into kinetic energy and drives the turbines.

The path of water

The water used in our hydroelectric power plant comes from Lake Aspen via the Säveån River. At a dam on the southern part of the lake, the water is divided into two flows. One that flows freely past Jonsered and a flow that is led into the power plant and converted into electricity, before being led out downstream of the power plant. A salmon ladder allows fish to get upstream past the power plant in the power plant flow and in the other flow the fish can swim freely. At the dam there is an eel migration network where eel fry can get upstream.

History

Skånska Cementgjuteriet built the power plant and the architect was Hans Hedlund. It was visited during construction in 1901 by King Oscar II. The king visited Jonsered on September 14, 1901 and wrote his name on the rock where the power plant canal begins.
Hans Hedlund was greatly inspired by the American architect Henry Hobson Richardson and the power station is an example of this: massive brick walls, rough-hewn natural stone and round-arched portals and windows. The County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland's description of the cultural-historical value: "Jonsered's power station has a very high cultural-historical value and the power station is in listed building class."

When it was inaugurated, it was the largest in Western Sweden and one of the country's first power plants with horizontal turbine units.
